Meditation & Mindfulness in Orange County
Meditation & Mindfulness Therapy for Anxiety, Stress, Trauma & Nervous System Regulation
If you've ever thought…
"I can't meditate."
You're not alone.
In fact, I used to believe the same thing.
What Are Meditation and Mindfulness?
My mind was always racing. Sitting still felt impossible. The moment I tried to quiet my mind, it seemed to become even louder. I thought I was failing at meditation.
What I eventually discovered—and what I now teach my clients—is that meditation isn't about having a perfectly quiet mind.
It's about changing your relationship with your thoughts.
Understanding the difference between mindfulness and meditation completely changed my experience and made these practices much more accessible.
Mindfulness vs. Meditation: What's the Difference?
Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they are slightly different and beautifully complement one another.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of intentionally bringing your awareness to the present moment with curiosity, openness and without judgment. It doesn't require you to sit still or set aside a specific amount of time. You can practice mindfulness while drinking your morning coffee, walking your dog, folding laundry, listening to your child, washing dishes or simply taking a slow breath.
Mindfulness is about noticing.
- Noticing your thoughts.
- Noticing your emotions.
- Noticing your body.
- Noticing your breathing.
- Noticing your reactions.
Most importantly, it's about noticing all of these things with compassion rather than criticism.
Meditation
Meditation is a dedicated practice that intentionally cultivates that same awareness. During meditation, we set aside time to focus our attention—often on the breath, the body, a visualization, a phrase or guided imagery—to strengthen our ability to be present.
Meditation isn't about forcing your mind to be empty.
Thoughts will come.
The practice is simply noticing when your mind has wandered and gently bringing your attention back, over and over again.
For me, mindfulness became the bridge that made meditation possible.
As I learned to become more present throughout my everyday life, sitting in meditation became much less intimidating. Instead of trying to stop my thoughts, I learned to observe them without believing every one of them or feeling like I had to react to them.
That shift changed everything.
Why Mindfulness Matters
One of the most important lessons I've learned—both personally and professionally—is that healing begins with awareness.
We can't change what we don't notice.
Many of us spend years living on autopilot, moving from one responsibility to the next while disconnecting from what our minds and bodies are trying to tell us. We push through stress. We ignore exhaustion. We suppress emotions. We become so focused on taking care of everyone else that we unintentionally abandon ourselves.
Mindfulness is the practice of coming home to yourself.
It's learning to notice what's happening within you with curiosity rather than judgment.
You might notice:
- "I'm realizing my shoulders have been tense all day."
- "I'm noticing my breathing has become shallow."
- "I'm noticing anxiety showing up right now."
- "A part of me feels hurt."
- "I didn't realize how overwhelmed I've been."
Without awareness, we tend to react automatically.
With awareness, we create space to choose a different response.
That space is where healing begins.
Mindfulness is one of the foundations of the work we do together because it supports nearly every therapeutic approach I use, including Breathwork, EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and Art Therapy. Before we can process, heal or transform something, we first have to notice it with kindness.
The Science Behind Meditation & Mindfulness
Meditation and mindfulness are more than relaxation techniques. Research has shown that consistent practice can create measurable changes in the brain and nervous system.
Regular practice has been associated with:
- Reduced stress and chronic anxiety
- Improved emotional regulation
- Increased attention, concentration and focus
- Better memory and cognitive flexibility
- Greater resilience during life's challenges
- Improved sleep
- Reduced physical tension and chronic pain
- Decreased symptoms of anxiety, depression, PTSD and burnout
- Increased self-awareness and self-compassion
When we live in a constant state of stress, our nervous system often remains stuck in survival mode. Our muscles tighten, our breathing becomes shallow, our minds race and our bodies have difficulty resting and recovering.
Meditation and mindfulness gently teach the brain and body that they are safe enough to slow down.
Over time, many people notice they become less reactive, more present and more connected—to themselves and to the people around them.
How Can Meditation & Mindfulness Help?
Meditation and mindfulness can support healing for many concerns, including:
- Anxiety and chronic stress
- Trauma and PTSD
- Depression
- Burnout
- ADHD and difficulty focusing
- Emotional overwhelm
- Grief and loss
- Chronic pain
- Sleep difficulties
- Perfectionism and people-pleasing
- Emotional regulation
- Self-esteem and self-worth
- Life transitions
- Personal growth and self-discovery
Many clients also discover that these practices help them recognize emotional patterns earlier, calm their nervous systems more quickly and respond intentionally instead of reacting automatically.
What Does a Meditation Session Look Like?
There is no one "correct" way to meditate.
One of the biggest myths about meditation is that successful meditation means having no thoughts.
That's simply not true.
Every mind wanders.
The practice is noticing that your attention has drifted and gently bringing it back without judging yourself.
During our work together, I may introduce different styles of meditation depending on your goals, personality and nervous system.
These may include:
- Mindfulness meditation
- Guided meditation
- Breath-focused meditation
- Body scan meditation
- Loving-kindness meditation
- Visualization and imagery
- Walking or movement meditation
- Grounding exercises
- Nervous system regulation practices
Some meditations are only a few minutes long, while others are more immersive.
Sometimes meditation becomes the focus of a session. Other times, it's woven naturally into therapy or coaching to help regulate the nervous system, process emotions or prepare for deeper therapeutic work.
Every session is individualized to meet you where you are.

Meditation Is a Practice—Not Perfection
One of the greatest gifts meditation has given me is realizing that I don't have to control every thought that enters my mind.
I simply have to notice it.
Then gently return.
Again.
And again.
That is the practice.
Every time we bring our attention back to the present moment, we're strengthening the very skills that help us become calmer, more resilient and more grounded in everyday life.
Meditation isn't about becoming someone different.
It's about becoming more connected to who you already are.
Whether you've never meditated before or you've tried it and thought, "This isn't for me," I'll meet you where you are. Together we'll find practices that fit your personality, your goals and your nervous system.
There isn't one right way to meditate.
There is only your way.
