IFS-Informed Therapy in Orange County, CA
Many of us have experienced moments where we think:
"Part of me wants to leave the relationship but another part of me wants to stay."
"Part of me knows I'm safe but another part of me feels terrified."
"Part of me wants to stop people-pleasing but another part is afraid of disappointing everyone."
That inner conflict is something almost all of us experience.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that recognizes we all have different "parts" of ourselves. Rather than seeing these parts as something that's wrong with us, IFS views them as normal responses to life experiences.
If you've seen the movie Inside Out, you've already been introduced to this idea. Just as the different emotions in the movie each have an important role, we all have different parts within us that are trying to help us in their own way.
Some parts carry fear, shame, sadness, grief or anger. Other parts work hard to protect us by staying busy, striving for perfection, pleasing others, avoiding difficult emotions, shutting down or staying in control. Even behaviors that no longer serve us often began as attempts to keep us emotionally safe.
At the center of all of these parts is your authentic Self—the calm, compassionate, wise, grounded part of you that isn't defined by fear or past experiences.
In my work, I often integrate IFS-informed concepts to help clients understand these different parts of themselves with curiosity instead of judgment. Rather than asking, "What's wrong with me?" we begin asking, "What is this part trying to protect me from?"
That simple shift can create profound healing.
How Can IFS-Informed Work Help You?
Learning to understand your different parts can help you:
- Heal unresolved trauma and childhood wounds
- Develop greater self-compassion
- Reduce anxiety and emotional overwhelm
- Understand perfectionism and people-pleasing
- Break cycles of self-abandonment
- Work through shame and self-criticism
- Improve relationships and communication
- Better regulate emotions
- Understand protective behaviors such as emotional eating, substance use, overworking, avoidance or emotional numbing
- Feel more connected to your authentic self
As we begin understanding the purpose behind each part, many people experience less inner conflict and more peace.
What Does a Session Look Like?
My approach is warm, collaborative and compassionate.
Together we'll become curious about the different parts of you that show up throughout your life. You might notice a part that feels anxious before speaking up, another that constantly criticizes you, another that wants to keep everyone happy or one that simply wants to hide.
Instead of fighting those parts or trying to get rid of them, we'll slow down and get to know them.
We'll explore questions like:
- What is this part trying to accomplish?
- When did it first begin helping you?
- What is it protecting you from?
- What does it need today?
As those protective parts begin to feel understood and safe, we can gently explore the deeper emotions they have been guarding.
Because I also integrate mind-body approaches including mindfulness, somatic awareness, breathwork, EMDR, Brainspotting, clinical hypnotherapy, attachment work and nervous system regulation, we aren't only talking about these parts—we're helping your whole nervous system experience healing.
My goal isn't to eliminate parts of you.
It's to help every part feel seen while allowing your authentic Self to become the compassionate leader within.
You are not broken.
If part of you feels anxious while another part longs for peace, or one part wants connection while another wants to run away, that doesn't mean something is wrong with you.
It means different parts of you learned different ways to survive.
Together we'll help those parts feel seen, understood and supported so you can live from a place that's more grounded, connected and true to who you really are.
